Bycatch / Overfishing
Pygmy Devilrays swim in the ocean looking for tiny food, but sometimes they accidentally get caught in large fishing nets meant for other fish like tuna or sardines. This accidental catching, called bycatch, means they can't swim free and can get hurt or can't breathe underwater.
Being done about itScientists and fishers are working together to design smarter fishing nets that have special escape hatches for bigger animals like devilrays, letting them swim away safely. Also, many groups are teaching people about the importance of only catching what we need and protecting these amazing ocean gliders.
