Chinese Paddlefish

Psephurus gladius

Imagine a fish so big it could be longer than a school bus! That's right, we're talking about the incredible Chinese Paddlefish, sometimes called the Chinese Swordfish. This magnificent creature once swam in the mighty rivers of China, like the famous Yangtze. With its enormous size, stretching up to 12 feet – and maybe even a whopping 23 feet! – it was one of the biggest freshwater fish ever to exist on our planet. Can you picture that swimming past you?

But its size wasn't the only amazing thing about this river giant. Just look at its super cool nose! It wasn't really a nose, but a long, flat snout that looked just like a sword or a paddle. While its cousin, the American Paddlefish, used its paddle to find tiny snacks, our Chinese Swordfish was a fierce hunter! It used its special snout to detect other fish hiding in the murky waters, then swooped in to gobble them up. And get this: even though it mostly lived in rivers, young paddlefish would sometimes take epic journeys all the way to the ocean before returning home to the river as adults to have their own babies!

Sadly, this spectacular fish is no longer with us, having swum its last journey. But even though it's extinct, the Chinese Paddlefish remains a legend of the deep, a true river monster that reminds us of the incredible wonders our world once held. What an amazing creature it was!
