Bycatch / Overfishing
Imagine big fishing nets sweeping across the ocean floor, trying to catch fish like cod. Sometimes, our flat, diamond-shaped Barndoor Skates get tangled in these nets by accident, even though they weren't the fish the fishermen were looking for. This is called 'bycatch,' and when too many skates are caught this way, it's hard for them to have enough babies to keep their families strong.
Being done about itScientists and fishermen are working together to design special fishing nets that let skates wiggle out safely, and they are setting limits on how many fish can be caught. Also, regular people can help by choosing seafood that is caught in ways that don't harm our precious Barndoor Skates.
