Marvellous Spatuletail

Loddigesia mirabilis

Imagine a tiny, sparkling dancer, smaller than your thumb, but with a tail that looks like something out of a fairy tale! Meet the Marvellous Spatuletail hummingbird, a real-life jewel of the forest. This little bird has four amazing tail feathers, and two of them are super long, stretching almost twice its body length! At the end of these long feathers are big, shiny, violet-blue discs, like little paddles or "spatules" that shimmer in the light. Its body is emerald green, its belly is pure white, and it has a dazzling turquoise throat that flashes like a secret signal. Isn't that incredible?

This feathered wonder lives hidden deep in the misty cloud forests of Peru, a magical place high up in the mountains. The Spatuletail is a master flyer, zipping and hovering like a tiny helicopter! It uses its super-long beak to sip sweet nectar from trumpet-shaped flowers, like a straw in a juice box. But here's the coolest part: when a boy Spatuletail wants to impress a girl, he performs an incredible dance! He fans and waves those amazing spatule-tipped tail feathers in a fancy figure-eight pattern, showing off his unique style. It's a dance party in the sky!

But this bird isn't just pretty; it has a super important job! The Marvellous Spatuletail is like a special delivery service for flowers. As it sips nectar, pollen sticks to its face and then gets carried to the next flower, helping plants make seeds. It has a secret partnership with certain flowers that have long, narrow tubes – only its beak can reach the nectar! Without our little Spatuletail, these flowers would struggle, and without the flowers, the Spatuletail wouldn't have food. This amazing teamwork shows us why protecting this magnificent creature and its forest home is so important for everyone!
