You might know regular otters are pretty awesome, but this one takes 'awesome' to a whole new level. Imagine an otter that can grow longer than an adult person – up to 1.8 meters! That's right, the Giant Otter, or *Pteronura brasiliensis* if you want to get fancy, is the absolute longest member of the weasel family. But here's a secret: unlike most of its weasel cousins who prefer to be solo adventurers, these super-sized otters love hanging out in big, happy families!
That's right, these giant friends are super social butterflies of the river! You'll often find them splashing and playing in groups of three to eight, all led by a special mom and dad pair. They're like the ultimate team, always working together and looking out for each other. They're busy during the day, chattering away with all sorts of sounds – they're the loudest otters on the planet! There are only about 5,000 giant otters left in the whole wide world, which is a tiny number compared to many other animals, making them very special and needing our protection to help their families grow!
Giant Otters need clean rivers to swim, hunt, and live in, but pollution from trash, chemicals, and oil makes their water dirty. This can make them very sick, poison their food, and damage their beautiful fur.
