Bycatch / Overfishing
Flapper Skates often get tangled in large fishing nets that are trying to catch other fish, which is called 'bycatch.' Also, too many skates have been caught over the years, which is called 'overfishing,' making it hard for them to have enough babies to keep their numbers healthy.
Being done about itScientists and fishers are working together to design special nets that have openings for skates to swim out of safely. People are also creating protected areas in the ocean where skates can live and have their babies without being disturbed.
