Critically Endangered Sawfish

Pristis pristis

Get ready to meet one of the ocean's most amazing mysteries – the incredible Sawfish! Imagine an animal with a long, flat nose covered in sharp teeth, like a giant, underwater saw! Even though it looks a lot like a shark, this magnificent creature is actually a type of ray, and it can grow as long as a school bus – up to 20 feet! It glides silently over the sandy seafloor with its sleek, grey body, perfectly camouflaged in its shallow water home.

Now, about that amazing saw – it's not just for show! This special snout is a super-duper hunting tool. Sawfish use it like a ninja sword, swinging it side-to-side to stun schools of fish with a quick swipe! They can also use it to dig in the mud, uncovering yummy crabs and other snacks hiding on the bottom. These gentle giants usually hunt at night, using a secret superpower called 'electroreception' to find hidden prey in the dark, murky waters. Pretty cool, right?

Sawfish are like the ocean's silent guardians, helping to keep our underwater worlds healthy and balanced. Sadly, all five types of sawfish are in big trouble and are Critically Endangered. Their unique saw, which makes them so special, also makes them easy to get tangled in fishing nets, and their homes are shrinking. But we can all help protect these ancient mariners! By learning about them and sharing their story, we can help ensure these amazing creatures keep swimming in our oceans for many, many years to come!
